Posted by admin | Under Olympus E420 Sunday Jul 25, 2010So, for my birthday, my mom agreed to get me a DSLR, I had my heart set on the canon, but instead, she got me an Olympus E420, and I’m not quite sure what to do.
I mean, I suppose, I want to get more into photography like equine photography specifically. Can somebody giveme on advice if I should keep the E420 or tell her I want the canon? (I can return said Olympus) thanks!
Personally I would prefer the Canon but the Olympus is a fine camera. It is also the smallest and lightest DSLR on the market.
If your doing Equine photography on a budget it may actually benefit you in that the crop factor is 2x rather than 1.6x. This means that you will get more telephoto ability out of the same focal length lens. For example if you had a 200mm lens on a Canon Rebel it would perform the same as a 320mm lens would on a full frame digital or 35mm camera would. With the Olympus it would perform as a 400mm lens would. Thus giving you more reach.
In case you don’t know what a crop factor is. Due to the fact that entry and mid level DSLR’s use a sensor that is smaller that 35mm film a given focal length will have a different field of view. It essentially crops the edges off. So what you get appears to bring your subject closer than it would with 35mm film. This is a benefit in the telephoto end but a detriment for wide angle shots. The camera companies have dealt with the wide angle end by producing lenses that are wider than would be required with 35mm. For example the kit lens on most DSLR’s is about an 18-55mm while for film cameras it was 28-80mm.
The downsides to the Olympus are that it has the smallest sensor of any DSLR. Larger sensors produce better dynamic range and perform better at high ISO settings. I honestly don’t think you would ever notice but it is true.
Another downside is that their are fewer lenses available than there would be for Canon. Olympus switched to the 4/3rds system when they began making DSLR’s so none of their older lenses will work. You will find very few used Olympus lenses. Third party lens manufacturers also don’t make nearly as many lenses for Olympus as they would for Canon and Nikon. The 4/3rds system is the same aspect ratio as a point and shoot camera so if you like to print your photos at 4×6 size you will have to crop all of them as well. All other DSLR’s use a 3:2 aspect ratio. So a 4×6 photo does not require any cropping. Other traditional sizes like 8×10 or 11×14 will require cropping for all DSLR’s though.

If you can afford I would recommend Olympus 8mm but id you want cheap one then the 1st one, Rokinon is a good alternative choice.

for a kids first slr
It’s probably alright but I’d recommend Canon over Olympus. Olympus made great film cameras back in the day but aren’t at the stature that Canon is – at least not right now.
Also you may want to consider who this camera is for, a "kid’s slr?" Does this "kid" seem to have a real respect for the equipment? I can’t tell you how many write ups we see here daily about folks who bash and mistreat these devices and then wonder why they’re broken and don’t work.
I try to impress on folks that these are expensive, sensitive electronic devices that don’t do well when
roughed or beaten up, bashed around or wet.
If you can answer these questions, for yourself not me, in the positive that your "kid" actually does have this respect then by all means.
In the end the Olympus will probably be fine I just happen to be a Canon guy.

Well from the three options that you suggest, I would immediately forget about the Olympus. Which leaves the Canon and Nikon. Now you’ve got a tough choice. Both of these makes are generally regarded as the best when it comes to digital cameras. Best thing to do would be to check out some reviews of both of the models you mention and take it from there.
