Evolt E-500 question about the frequent flash before photo shoots?

I inherited an Olympus Evolt E-500 SLR camera and I know nothing about it. I feel confident enough to take pictures well enough… but when I try to take a picture of my 1 year old son, the flash goes erratically fast and frequent, causing him to squint in every photo I take. I’ve tried looking online to find the answer and I came up short. I need a simple explanation, if possible, and a solution to this. The sequence is like this: Auto focus, flash flash flash flash flash, shoot. Please, helpful answers only! Thank you!
Well I tried everything you all have mentioned and could not get it to stop flashing a hundred times before taking a picture. I pretty much hit every button on the camera until it stopped happening. I needed to turn off the Auto Focus Illuminator. Or AF Illuminator as it it displayed. Thanks for the help anyways.

Turn off the redeye reduction feature

If you are shooting in low light, the flash may be assisting your camera to find the best auto-focus location.

You need to spend a lot of time with your camera and its user manual so you understand all of its features how the work and how to use them under different circumstances.
