Thoughts on the Olympus Evolt E520 SLR Camera?

Sunday Mar 7, 2010

http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-E520-Digital-14-42mm-40-150mm/dp/B001Q3M4IQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1267301939&sr=1-2

I’m looking at buying this camera. I’ve done a bit of research but could really use your opinion. This will be my first SLR so I’d have to do a lot of experimenting with this sort of camera. I’m just looking at this camera as an amateur for nature photos and things like that.

But I like I said I would love to hear anything you have to say (i.e starting lenses, helpful sites, anything)
-Thanks

You have been doing your research, so did you notice that the larger the cameras sensor, the higher resolution the images can be? For this reason, Nikon and Canon have a full line of full frame DSLR’s and Sony has one. Unfortunately not only will Olympus not be making full frame DSLR’s, there current 4/3rds sensor is the smallest made for DSLR’s

Did you further notice the number of lenses that Olympus makes that are best used when shooting nature shots? The longer the lens the better. In this case, having a smaller sensor increases the reach of the Olympus lenses by 2x

If the price is right, go for it.

Here are some comparisons of the E520 next to some top selling DSLR’s

Is the Olympus Evolt E-420 SLR Camera Sufficient Enough to Take a Friend’s Wedding Photos?

Sunday Feb 21, 2010

I used the E-410 to do a friend’s wedding in November 2008 and have been asked to take a friend’s wedding photos this year as well. I’m currently using a P+S daily which is the Panasonic equivalent of the Leica D-Lux 2. The Leica D-Lux 4 (and Panasonic equivalent) is supposed to be an excellent all-around camera and sometimes I am tempted to get one of those to try out to see if THAT would be sufficient enough for outdoor wedding shots but, then again, would prefer the already-known clarity of a DSLR camera. I’m looking for the $500 and under price range (idealistically $300-400 and I’m open to used cameras as well) with a live-view lcd and the smaller the better. From the random shots I’ve seen on flickr.com taken with the E-420’s I’ve been quite impressed and think it’d do quite well for the wedding (it’s not an extravagant wedding, just one they’re putting together themselves, etc.).

Does anyone have any possible recommendations with the E-420 in regards to wedding photos (maybe lens recommendations?) and/or other DSLR camera models, etc. they’d like to share? If anyone has a camera they’d consider selling you can give me info, etc. at suzie@37.com . Thanks!
Hello all and thanks for the responses. As for the live-view, here’s a copy and paste from the specs at the Olympus site:

AUTOFOCUS WITH LIVE VIEW.

Two innovative technologies merge to create a unique digital experience. The E-420’s on-Screen Autofocus works as seamlessly as a point-and-shoot to display subjects in focus on the LCD the instant the shutter is pressed half way. And the Live View LCD, enables photographers to hold the camera away from their faces and at angles they just cannot reach by using the optical viewfinder alone..

In regards to the IS, I don’t use it at all anyway and I know that many manufacturers "cheat" with the higher ISO.

As for using the E-410 at my friend’s wedding, I’d tested out an E-500 (I had owned these cameras a few months before the wedding to have test time on them, etc.) and 2 E-410’s (one didn’t offer lcd previews so I sold it and got the other one). That wedding was HORRIBLY planned… (see next section below)
They’d told me the night BEFORE the wedding that they were having a rehearsal wedding. Don’t ask me WHY you’d EVER consider having a REHEARSAL in the later evening when the wedding’s at noon! D’OH! Plus, what made matters slightly more stressful on me was that nobody else took photos and nobody video’d either! So I was glad I took a Panasonic version of a C-Lux 1 or 2 (I forget now) with me to take videos while resting it on top of the E-410 which was on the tripod! ACK! Here’s a bunch of the pictures I took pre-wedding (the wedding ones came out MUCH better so please don’t judge!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JzJYVFPO3o . I think about 1/4 (maybe less) of the pictures I took pre-wedding came out ok but this time I’m going to be there (it’s MUCH better planned, evidently lol) a few days prior to mess with settings, etc. for the wedding as it’ll be outside for the wedding itself and then they’ll have the after-wedding stuff inside.

Once again, plz note: pre-wedding pics were tests
So, to the other person who said I may wish to own a camera first, etc. I had owned the 3 cameras previously mentioned in my follow-ups (above) at different times. I’m a p+s kind of person which is why I seek the live-view plus I HATE dslr’s. So I guess maybe I’ll look into an E-420 and mess with different lenses along the way and see what turns out nicely… I know the Leica lenses are supposed to be WONDERFUL but are pricey and maybe I’ll dabble with the Nikon lenses or something and the different f-stop lenses to see what I can come up with…

Olympus makes fine cameras. My one concern is that the kit lens that comes with it is usually the 18-42mm lens. You’re going to have to be pretty close to get some good shots. You can get the 420 at walmart and get an additional zoom lens all for under 500.00. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Olympus-E-420-10MP-Digital-SLR-Camera-with-14-42mm-Zoom-Lens-includes-2GB-XD-Card.-Additional-Accessory-Limited-Time-Offer/12560763 I don’t think it has live view but you really don’t need it. You’re seeing what the lens sees in the viewfinder. Don’t use a point and shoot for a wedding. The smaller sensors just don’t have the quality. You can take it for a back up just in case.

Preview screen on Olympus Evolt E300 isn’t showing anything?

Wednesday Feb 10, 2010

I know it’s capable of live preview, so I find it odd that it isn’t working. I turn the camera on and it only shows a black screen. I can still take pictures and everything, I was just wondering if anyone knew how to fix it?

The Olympus E-300 does not have live view capability. The LCD screen is used to navigate the menu and view images already taken. Live View was not introduced until the 330.
